An unpredictable thriller, The Lookout stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Brick, Mysterious Skin) as Chris, a young man who had everything ahead of him–until a car accident killed two of his friends and left him with brain damage. Now reduced to being a janitor at a bank, Chris struggles to maintain some semblance of order in his life. When a guy he meets at a bar turns out to be an old classmate, Chris succumbs to his flattery, not suspecting that the guy’s intentions are criminal. The Lookout was probably sold as Memento meets Inside Man, but its rewards are more modest than either. Though the plot is never obvious, the characters are never surprising–and in this kind of thriller, the payoff is when characters exceed what they (and the audience) believe they are. Still, the writing, acting, and directing are all solid, and from moment to moment the movie proves compelling. Jeff Daniels (The Purple Rose of Cairo) is particularly good as Chris’s blind roommate, who smells a rat but can’t persuade Chris to do something about it. –Bret Fetzer

This Daughter of the Regiment is a great memento of Beverly Sills in one of her best roles. She once described her part in Donizetti’s screwball comedy as “Lucille Ball with high notes.” In this enjoyable 1974 performance, that’s how she plays the unsophisticated orphan girl adopted by a regiment of Napoleon’s army, smitten with a peasant lad, and unwillingly betrothed to a decadent duke. Her larger-than-life presence is supported by a musically and comically capable cast, oriented toward broad comic effects, with results something like a high-grade sitcom.

Donizetti originally wrote the opera to a French libretto and later adapted it in Italian. Sung in English, it often sounds a bit like Gilbert and Sullivan. The music is both witty and spectacular, with plenty of high-note acrobatics (which Sills and William McDonald negotiate gracefully) and slapstick interactions for Spiro Malas as the gruff Sergeant Sulpice and Muriel Costa-Greenspon as the socially pretentious Marquise. –Joe McLellan

But when Emily locks herself in the trunk of her own car, she’s surprised when the car is stolen by Vincent (Benicio Del Toro, from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas), a professional car thief whose partner (Harry Connick Jr.) has misplaced $200,000 of the Mob’s money. Christopher Walken stars as Emily’s “Uncle Ray,” who’s hot on her trail as she goes on the lam with Vincent. It’s not the meandering plot that matters so much as the funny dialogu between Silverstone and Del Toro, who steals his scenes with a smoky mumble and easygoing charm. This one is mostly for Alicia fans, but the film has got enough good laughs and low-key appeal to make it a home-video sleeper. –Jeff Shannon

Reilly, one of Hollywood’s most solid character actors, makes the most of his Golden Globe-nominated star turn as Dewey, whose road to stardom is paved with a childhood tragedy that claims the life of his prodigiously talented brother (”The wrong kid died,” is his father’s mantra), instant stardom (his first record is a hit just 35 minutes after it was recorded), sex and drugs, and the inevitable “dark (effen) period” that leads him to rehab. Reilly gets solid backup from current and former Saturday Night Live alumni, including Kirsten Wiig as his incredibly fertile first wife who has no faith in his musical aspirations (”You’re never going to make it,” she cheerily ends one phone call); Tim Meadows, never better, as Dewey’s drummer, who, in one of the film’s best scenes, does a poor job of dissuading him from trying marijuana); and Chris Parnell as his bass player. Jenna Fischer leaves Pam back at The Office as Darlene, Dewey’s virtuous dut partner. Hilarious cameos give Walk Hard a great “Hey!” factor: Hey, that’s Frankie Muniz as Buddy Holly. Hey, that’s “Kenneth” from 30 Rock. Hey, there’s Jack Black and Paul Rudd as–no kidding–Paul McCartney and John Lennon revealing “a rift in the Beatles.” Some of the jokes are obvious (come on; the guy’s last name is Cox), others inspired. But the decades-spanning music, echoing the styles of gritty Johnny Cash, romantic Roy Orbison, obtuse Bob Dylan, trippy Brian Wilson, and even a bit of anachronistic punk rock, is as pitch perfect and affectionately observed as in The Rutles, This Is Spinal Tap and A Mighty Wind. Walk Hard earns its R-rating, particularly for a sure-to-be-talked-about scene of hotel-room debauchery. But: Hilarious? Outrageous? Twisted? To quote the title of one of Dewey’s hit songs, “Guilty as Charged.” –Donald Liebenson
